Trinidad Discovery

Being born in Trinidad there isn't much of a story behind my discovery, but of course I didn't get to choose where the stork dropped me off in 1994. In the 13 years of my life I've learned so much about Trinidad between school and my grandparents. There isn't one day I don't discover something new. There is so much un-discovered history waiting to be found, like what we will find beneath the depths of the ocean, or what we will uncover in the sand just by walking on the beach. There is so much more to be discovered here.

Whether you're here for a week or you've lived here for your whole life you always will have a memory of Beautiful Trinidad whether it's something you found or something you take home with you even if it's an image in your mind. My most memorable event of Trinidad is when I was seven years old and my mother took my friend Joy and me to Moonstone Beach. It was a hot summer day and we were playing in the water when Joy fell in a drop off and got caught in a whirlpool; my mom had to jump into the water with all her clothes on and save her before she drowned. There are so many more memories that are just waiting to be found and stay with you for the rest of your life.

In the 13 years of living in Trinidad I've had many friends, been through hard times, and learned so much about my ancestors from as faraway north as Del Norte to as far south as Eureka. I've even traveled many places and it just makes me appreciate Trinidad even more each time. I know that if I lived in a big city I wouldn't have the same kinds of memories of the beach and I know I wouldn't have the family and friends right in town that I can go to any time I need them.

I feel like I am part of the history of Trinidad because my grandparents and my mother. Glen Saunders (my grandfather) was born here and went to the first Trinidad School in 1930. He became Mayor of Trinidad from 1948 to 1955. Then, in 1969 my mom went to Trinidad School for 9 years. Just knowing that my grandparents were so involved with Trinidad and still are just makes me appreciate the fact that I am from Trinidad and that Trinidad is my home and I have family History here.

I feel so lucky to live in Trinidad and I think that all of us take it for granted and don't even notice it. I'm thankful that my great grandfather started his family here and I am honored to have a family and a town that is like one big family. The memories of Trinidad are everlasting and I will never forget everything I've discovered in my life here in Trinidad.
